Ubuntu updating bootloader
Ok, I have already trawled through forums and although there have been other posts similar to this I feel I need to add some detail regarding my particular irritation.
I installed Ubuntu 12.10 on a system already having Windows 8 - the Ubuntu partition was created during install.
Note that there can be one or more system partions.
The ESP is effectively the boot partition, and contains the necessary images to boot a system.
The last time I dual-booted Ubuntu with Win8 and needed to uninstall Ubuntu, I could just remove it in Windows as if it were a program.
